Do these popups say “Messenger Service” in the title bar?

If so, then you are utilizing an older edition or (un-up to date) of Windows (pre XP SP2). These type of popups exploit the Messenger Service in your Windows OS, which after XP SP2 is disabled by default.

A popup blocker “thingy” will be of no aid in this situation.

You have 3 options to end the difficulty.

1. You can disable and cease Messenger Service by typing “solutions msc.” (with no the “”s) into your Run Box and then disabling and stopping Messenger Service.

OR

2. You can use the free utility called Shoot The Messenger to immediately disable this unnecessary service.

Please note that Windows Messenger Service is not the exact same as any Immediate Messenger plan that you may have on your laptop or computer. Disabling it will not result in you to drop any IM performance that you might have.

OR (Greatest Solution)

3. Update or upgrade your operating system to at least Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Excellent luck

Another possibility–if the pop-up that you do not want is asking or telling you to click a link or to download something, then it is spyware.

If so, try an online scan (google MicroTrend Housecall and then click the free online scan option). If that doesn’t work, you may need to clean it out yourself.
