Question by Eatmie: What is the computers “Registry” and will it harm the computer if it’s cleaned?
I have McAfee for computer security; under the “Quick Clean” I leave off checking the “Registry Cleaner” because I’m not certain if it will harm my computer. What is your computers registry, and if it’s cleaned what happens when it is “CLEANED”?

Cleaning your registry is fine, it basically gets rid of all the commands that are no longer used, for example it may be written in the registry to do various things with MSN messenger that you never ever use and never will, it will remove the command line which is often written by programs you will never use, cleaning it out creates a clearer view for you pc……
Imagine a book written in english and spanish mixed up together and then you remove the spanish and the things you dont need it becomes easier fo you to read, in this case your cpu.
Thanks Mike

Your windows registry is an active database that indexes all of the information on your computer, coordinating the function of the hard-drive, I/O functions and motherboard components and extensions. “Cleaning” the registry involves removing suspected virus components as well as “crumbs” from old software that you’ve removed from your PC.
You’re better off not using McAfee’s registry cleaner software. If you want something to scan the registry for you the best program out there right now (for free) is called Malwarebytes. This software is available from malewarebytes.org (and make sure you only download it from that site, CNET or TUCOWS because there are a number of virus mirrors out there distributing bogus virus software).
The Registry is a system file that contains bits of information stored by many programs. Some are required by Windows, some are optional for Windows and some are there for the programs themselves. The danger in using a Registry cleaner is that if it’s more aggressive than wise, it can remove things that really are needed — at least on your machine. This is a case of “Discretion being the better part of Valor.”
But because of the Registry’s structure, most of the junk that gets left behind after programs are uninstalled doesn’t really affect Windows’ performance very much.
All in all, I’d say you probably don’t need to clean the Registry.
Hope that helps.
A registry cleaner is a type of software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system whose purpose is to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry. However the necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts not agreeing on their benefit. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware is often associated with utilities of this type.
